There are times in life when you are writing a lot about the wonderful new music that is setting your world on fire. There are other times when you are riding in a car with your friends through epic scenery just listening to music. I’ve been spending a lot of time on the latter but will try to catch up with all the tuneage goodness. Until then, here is my summer jam.
Akin to Jamie Lidell and Mayer Hawthorne, Fitz and the Tantrums has that old school sound I’ve become increasingly obsessed with.Their album came out in 2010 but only recently fell onto my radar with their participation in ACL this year. I’m beyond excited to see them live and until that time, take a break from Adele and check out this performance of ‘Don’t Gotta Work It Out’ in Seattle.
Just a quick post today, from a very good recommendation by my good friend Sean Riley, I bring you True Love, by HFE. Their whole album is fantastic and should be enjoyed by most.
May this music carry him swiftly and safely on his bike ride down the Pacific Highway. I know it will join me on mine in less than one month’s time…
Its been a pretty fantastical weekend that was perfectly bookended by two intensely different bands covering The White Stripes ‘Seven Nation Army’. Glitch Mob was a dubstep party of epic proportions and I’m pretty sure I’m still mildly deaf due to our proximity to the front speakers.
After sunshine, visits with Adits, and general shenanigans, I ended up Continue reading →
I’m going to Glitch Mob tonight and I couldn’t be more excited. Phantogram is opening and Glitch Mob kicked some serious ass at Sasquatch. Unexpectedly, at least for me, they perform on stage using iPads, which is pretty fantastic to watch. This is an installation they did while performing.
BONUS: Enjoy their version of Daft Punk’s ‘Derezzed’ they did for the remixed Tron album,
For no other reason then the video is a great view into what her shows are like and because I feel like Robyn is severely under-represented on this blog. There are few who can rock platform shoes, leggings and some sort of crop top sweater made for a linebacker the way she can.
Frank Ocean is the not Tyler the Creator part of Odd Future and current it-boy collaborator for Jay-Z and Kanye. He also just released a pretty fantastical mixtape called Nostalgia, Ultra; utilizing covers of all sorts of great songs and putting his own spin on them. While I’m digging quite a few songs on the mix, it’s ‘Swim Good’ that is fast coming into heavy rotation on my Summer Jams list. and yes. I have a Summer Jams list.
Carls has been giving me well-deserved grief for my lack of posting
I need to stop letting life get in the way
It’s been almost 2 months since I posted last
I recently got a great set of headphones that I really enjoy listening to musics on
I’ve got an idea for a set of serial posts, which I hope will keep me in the game for the near term
I’ve been talking about covers with some coworkers quite a bit recently
If you know Carls, you know she’s prone to asking the important questions that everyone else is afraid to ask, like:
“Top five favorite ‘Indie’ accessory items, GO!”
“In 2630 words or less, detail the pros and cons of marrying a very rich, but very crazy man (eg Tom Cruise)”
“Would you want the ability to become invisible if it meant that you had to be naked at all other times?”
“Should the world institute ‘Wear-a-tutu-to-work’ day? (trick question, the answer is an obvious and resounding YES)”
The point is, I want to be prepared when she poses the following:
“You’re stuck on an island with only one regularly sized mix-tape of your own creation. What songs are on it?“
If you know me, the answer is probably “wow you’re an idiot and you’ve managed to accidentally bring a cd that had Rebecca Black’s Friday recorded on it 14 times” NO GOOD.
In an attempt to distract you from this inevitable and awful situation, I will attempt to highlight the 15 songs that I would be ok with being the only 15 songs I ever heard again in my life. Not only are these songs RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME, but they’ve got real staying power, at least in my book.
W/o further ado, I give you longtime favorite:
Champagne Supernova, by Oasis
To celebrate this song, I wanted to share a very heartfelt cover (see above for rationale on detailing a cover) by Matt Pond PA
Some bands have the capacity to continue to make wonderfully creative new music while still pulling you back to a specific time. For me that band will always be Beirut and their ability to Continue reading →
So two-thirds of TOA is headed to Sasquatch this year. We are subbing in Matty for Dowks and he has big ‘fro shoes to fill. I’m excited for a lot of the smaller bands, and determined to stay up later this year for the electronic shows that we missed last year. Along with the perennial favorites Washed Out and Foster the People, I’m really excited to see The Glitch Mob and MSTRKRFT live for the first time. Also to see some Pacific Northwest hipsters dressed in full Sasquatch outfits. Nothing really beats that. Listen to the Glitch Mob below and check out the fun (but sadly not embed-able) video for MSTRKRFT here.
